Toy Car

Brief

  • This project is about taking inexpensive materials and turning them into something valuable and desirable.
  • The aim is to design a product that requires minimal processing of a low-cost material which, nonetheless, has a refinement and character that appeals to people.
  • The intent is to investigate how toys can transcend the childhood market to become coveted, collectable objects.
  • The toy car is made using only mild steel stock sections and the production involves applying simple cutting and joining operations e.g. spot welding.
  • The toy has been spray painted. The wheels have been created by laser-cutting 5 layers of 3mm black acrylic and attached to the car using 2 copper rods and 4 springs .
  • Through the correct use of proportion and product language the form suggests a more valuable and complex artefact.
