Bamboo Cutlery

Brief

  • The purpose of this project is to create functional, compact and sustainable cutlery.
  • Research led to the use of bamboo, a very strong, durable and sustainable material.
  • The bamboo plant is relatively easy to craft into a knife, fork and spoon.
  • Once crafting is complete, the cutlery is coated in olive oil to stop the bamboo from splintering and also this prevents the cutlery from absorbing the smell of food.
  • The spoon is hollow which allows extra capacity for liquid to be held rather than just in the bowl of the spoon, as is usually the case. 
  • Another design incorporates steel cutlery (crafted and cut by hand) and bamboo chopsticks into a bamboo case. 
  • Both designs are fun and sustainable as they are a unique shape and the steel would last many years.
