Upholstered Chairs

The Process

Brief

  • This project focuses on repairing chairs in a unique fashion.
  • These chair bases had been discarded by furniture companies becauses they had a few cracks and scratches on them. The fabrics were disgarded offcuts from upholstering companies.
  • The first step was to repair the chair to ensure it was strong enought to sit on, using glue and metal fixings.
  • The next step was to make the legs for the chairs. One set of legs was created out of planks of wood found by the roadside, by using wood-joining techniques and wood glues. They were strong because of the crosshatch effect created when the wood grain was overlapped at 90 degrees.
  • The second set of legs was created from sustainable and strong bamboo. Each leg was made from 3 rods of bamboo, attached using wood glue and string.
  • The final step was to upholster these chairs. One chair had a base layer of foam, overlayed with a green crosshatched material, attached by threading string around the outside of the chair. The other chair was upholstered with a royal purple fabric that was attached to the chair by using strong, dried, tree vines instead of thread.
  • Both the chairs have been uncoventionally upholstered but this unique style of creation makes them more appealing and enjoyable.
