Chair in the Wild

Brief

  • Designers should recognise that their work may leave the confines of the studio and be 'released' into the 'real' world, where it will be used, abused and eventually thrown away.
  • Designers must be resourceful, using appropriate materials and processes with sensitivity. The creativity of a designer will come up against limitations in the real world.
  • This project involves planning, building, using and responsibly disposing of a piece of outdoor seating.
  • The chair is made 'on location' in a forest where it is to be used.
  • A simple tool kit is used to assemble the chair which includes a plastic bag, rope, plant ties, tape measure, pliers, knife, spade and a hammer.
  • The chair, made from sticks and leaves found in the surrounding location, is strong enough for a person to sit and rest on.
  • Afterwards, the materials are disposed of, back into their surroundings, and the tool kit is taken away.
